Buying and sizing notes
- Roof pitch, waste, valleys, hips, dormers, starter, ridge cap, and pattern can change actual shingle needs.
- Always verify bundle coverage on the specific product.
Roof shingle quantity tips
Roof shingle estimates are often wrong when people use the flat house footprint instead of the sloped roof surface. This calculator applies a pitch-based slope factor for you.
Pitch adds area
A 6/12 or 8/12 roof has more surface area than the flat footprint. The calculator uses rise and run to estimate that increase.
Field shingles only
Bundle estimates here are for field shingles. Starter, ridge cap, flashing, vents, and accessories are separate.
Complex roofs waste more
Hips, valleys, dormers, skylights, and cut-up roof plans can need a higher waste allowance.
How to use this estimate
What this includes
- Building footprint
- roof pitch slope factor
- overhang allowance
- extra roof area
- bundle coverage
- waste allowance
What it does not include
- Starter shingles
- ridge cap
- flashing
- ventilation
- ice barrier rules
- tear-off disposal
Common mistakes
- Using flat footprint area as roof area
- Forgetting pitch/slope factor
- Forgetting hips, valleys, dormers, and starter/ridge materials
Quick questions
Why does roof pitch change shingle quantity?
A pitched roof has more surface area than the flat building footprint. The calculator applies a slope factor from the roof pitch so you do not need to calculate the rafter length yourself.
Does this include ridge cap and starter shingles?
No. It estimates field shingle bundles. Starter, ridge cap, flashing, underlayment, ventilation, and accessories should be figured separately.
