Load planning calculator
Trailer Payload Calculator
Use this to sanity-check whether a planned load is getting close to the trailer’s rated capacity.
Start with common choices
Select what applies. If there is a quantity box, adjust the count before fine-tuning the estimate below.
Fine-tune the estimate
Maximum loaded trailer weight listed on the trailer data plate.
Also called curb weight or dry weight.
Add cargo you already know. Preset load choices are added separately.
Reserve capacity for uncertainty, gear, straps, fuel, and scale error.
Method
How this calculator estimates it
Remaining payload = trailer GVWR − empty trailer weight − selected/known cargo − safety reserve.
Avoid this
Common mistakes
- Assuming the trailer’s empty weight is the same as its payload.
- Ignoring tire load ratings.
- Forgetting ramps, fuel, tools, chains, attachments, and add-ons.
Before you choose
- Check trailer GVWR, axle rating, tire load rating, hitch rating, and tow vehicle rating separately.
- Bulk materials get heavy fast. A small volume of gravel, soil, concrete, or debris can overload a trailer.
- If the load changes tongue weight significantly, check tongue weight too.
